IOT – we like it!

It was just january 2019 we at Officiating’s Cool headquarters heard the first thing about Individual Officiating Techniques. And now we like it a lot!

Distance and stationary is the most important IOT principle. If you are moving, you cannot see anything. Make sure you understand basketball very good, you have to know when contact is about to occur, and at that moment, make sure you are standing still. You cannot make good decisions when you are moving. Smart people that researched referees noticed that as long as we’re running our eyeballs are dancing. You can imagine that dancing eyeballs avoid perfect vision.

For example in a situation when you going from Trail to Lead in a transition play and you see the player is going for a quick 1 on 1 drive, make sure you time it well and stand still at the time of contact to judge the play.

According with this principle, make sure you have proper distance from the play as well, when you are close to a play, everything is going twice as fast and at these times, referees make the most mistakes.
Try reading all the graffiti on a train for instance when you’re close to the fast moving train…. or at a distance of 10 to 20 metres. See my point? If not, increase the distance between your phone and your eyes šŸ˜‰
